assignment #5: shooting 2 subjects in the studio

I had a pretty specific idea in mind for this shoot which is why I don't have a lot of variety. I focused 70% of my time getting the light just right to capture the painter and the masterpiece! Thanks Tom and Sharky for being my models.

assignment #3: studio shoot ~ capturing 2 opposite emotions using lighting

The emotions my group selected were confident and insecure. We had only 10 minutes to capture each emotion using a two different lighting methods we selected collectively. For confident we used a beauty dish with a grid, and for insecure we used a small light box.

assignment #1: successful portraits

I shot this portrait of my friend Krystle on Mott street in SoHo New York. What I love about it is that she looks confident and cool surrounded by intimidating structures and rough textures. You also get a sense that she is genuinely happy to be there and isn't afraid of what is behind her.
This is a photograph of my cousin Evie, shot at our family's lake house in Connecticut. I think this photo successfully captures her playfulness and sense of humor. The cupcake being still wrapped suggests that she is posing for the camera hinting that she is outgoing her her age. The water droplets on her arms and wet hair clue that she has just been playing in the water which makes you imagine she will jump up and run around after this shot is captured.
This is a shot I took of a friend for his album cover. I think it is successful because it captures his calm nature. You can tell that he has been playing the guitar for a long time based on how comfortable he looks with his arms wrapped around it. It is also very apparent that he is the leader of the band and runs the show.
This is Kate Blanchet shot by Annie Leibovits. I think that this portrait is successful because it captures Blanchet's timelessness in a very unique way. At first glance this looks like it could be shot in the 1940's, but then you see her shoes and realize it's much more recent.  Her childlike pose also suggests that she'll remain a child at heart, no matter how old.

Here is a portrait of Christina Ricci shot by Craig McDean. I think this is a successful portrait because you can tell that she is a risk taker based not only on her pose, but also on her neon yellow nail polish that clearly does not match her top. It has a morbid and innocent vibe which is an unusual contradictory combination. It makes you wonder if she's the kind of person who would actually cut her hair off, or just threaten to.
